New Palmerston to Howard Springs Cycle Path Officially Opened

Staff from the Department of Lands and Planning were on hand to help open the new cycle path from Palmerston to Howard Springs on Sunday 11 September 2011.

About 80 people turned up on a fantastic dry season morning for the fun ride and walk with Mr Gunner MLA, on behalf of the Hon Gerry McCarthy MLA, Minister for Transport, and the local member Mr Wood MLA, officiating.

Both Mr Gunner and Mr Wood praised the new path and the benefits it will bring to Territorians - including preserving the historical North Australia Railway Line corridor, promoting a healthy lifestyle and reducing the impact on the environment from private motor vehicles.

Mr Gunner told participants how the new 5.4 kilometre cycle path connected Howard Springs to Palmerston, as well as linking the rural area to the Darwin CBD – an overall distance of about 35 kilometres. Mr Gunner also noted that the path was a Budget 2010 commitment, supporting government’s great Territory lifestyle initiative and was strongly advocated by Mr Wood.

After a quick ribbon ceremony, it was time to try out the new path, with Mr Gunner and Mr Wood leading a group of about 80 participants, including 40 cyclists. The cyclists had achallenging 11 kilometre return trip, with walkers a shorter 1.5 kilometres. Transport Group staff were on hand to help hand out water, sunscreen and encouragement for participants. On their return, the fun day participants were treated to a free BBQ at the Good Shepherd Lutheran College where Mr Wood presented prizes to three of the best dressedbikes.
